"He was the most American of artists and the most artistic of Americans," one man later said – "so American in fact that he is almost invisible to us." ANDY WARHOL – a riveting and often deeply moving film portrait of the most famous and famously controversial artist of the second half of the twentieth century – is the first to explore the complete spectrum of Warhol's astonishing artistic output, stretching across five decades from the late 1940's to his untimely death in 1987. Combining powerful on-camera interviews and rare still and motion picture footage, it is also the first to put Warhol himself – his humble family background and formative experiences in Pittsburgh, and his crucial apprenticeship as a commercial artist in New York – back into the presentation of his life.

Award Presentation to Andy Warhol de Jonas Mekas 　　États-Unis, 1964, 16mm, 12’, nb, vostf 　　image : Jonas Mekas et Gregory Markopoulos 　　« En 1964, la revue Film Culture a choisi Andy Warhol pour son prix annuel du film indépendant. Le projet était de montrer des films d’Andy, de lui demander de monter sur l’estrade et de lui donner le prix. Andy a dit non, il ne voulait pas de présentation publique. Alors j’ai décidé de lui donner sa récompense à la Factory, de filmer l’occasion et de montrer le film à la présentation du prix au New York Theatre. Andy pensa que c’était une bonne idée. J’étais en route pour la Factory avec trois bobines de film quand je me suis rendu compte que je n’avais rien à présenter à Andy. Au coin de la rue, j’ai acheté un panier de fruits variés qui fut présenté à Andy par le jeune fils de Nicholson. Quelques-unes des personnes présentes : Baby Jane Holzer, Gerard Malanga, Ivy Nicholson, Naomi Levine, Gregory Battcock, Kenneth King. Gregory Markopoulos était là et c’est lui qui faisait tourner la Bolex quand ce n’était pas moi. Gregory est dans le film aussi puisque la caméra était motorisée. En hommage à Andy, j’ai fait un tirage du film au ralenti, la plupart de ses films à cette période étant projetés à 16 images par seconde, alors qu’ils étaient filmés à 24. J’ai fait la même chose, mais j’ai dû le faire au moyen de la tireuse optique parce que je voulais mettre la musique des Supremes sur le film. C’était le fond sonore quotidien à la Factory à cette époque. » 　　Jonas Mekas

"Andy Warhol: Made in China" is a look at the man behind the legend: a film that captures the real Andy Warhol, as an artist and as a person, as he travels through China, from Hong Kong's glitter to the mystique of Peking's Forbidden City. Set in the Far East, the story begins with the opening of what was once the most elegant jet-set watering hole in Asia, Hong Kong's "I Club," whose owner, a young Chinese millionaire, decided to try an experiment: to transplant the most advanced, far-out Western culture to the Far East in a multimillion-dollar club that offered everything from restaurants and bars, to a health club and even an art gallery. Warhol was invited to attend the opening as a guest of honor showing his "Celebrity Portraits." The result of this cultural experiment was varied. Reactions to the "I Club" and Warhol's work ranged from outrage to indifference to wonder.
